His research shows that East and West Germans already differed significantly from one another even before the construction of the Berlin Wall, and that these differences cannot be explained solely by developments after 1990.

Becker emphasized: “The differences between East and West cannot be explained solely by the transformation process after 1990.” The study points to earlier historical differences – such as in industrialization, gender roles, and secularization – that had shaped regional identities long before the division of Germany.
