About Panu Poutvaara

Panu Poutvaara is professor of economics at the LMU Munich and director of the ifo Center for Migration and Development Economics. He is also the economist member of Germany's Expert Council on Integration and Migration and member of the editorial board at the European Journal of Political Economy and at the Leadership Quarterly. His work has been published in JEEA, the Economic Journal, European Economic Review, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Development Economics, and Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, among other journals, covering topics like welfare effects of immigration when accounting for labor market and public finance effects, political consequences of immigration, self-selection of emigrants in terms of their observable and unobservable characteristics, the role of beauty in politics, and the effects of pay for politicians on candidate quality. In 2022, his team launched an ongoing panel survey of Ukrainian refugees in different European countries, following their return, return intentions, and integration outcomes.
