RFBerlin Handbook Masterclass: “The Micro and Macro Economics of Short-Time Work” by Pierre Cahuc

Time: 10:00 Thursday 3 Apr 2025 – 18:00 Friday 4 Apr 2025

Location: Berlin, Germany

We are delighted to announce the launch of the ROCKWOOL Foundation Handbook Masterclass Series, inspired by the latest volume of the Handbook of Labour Economics. This series invites contributed authors of handbook chapters to Berlin for in-depth, two-day teaching sessions. We are excited to welcome Pierre Cahuc, Attila Lindner, Arindrajit Dube, and Barbara Petrongolo, joining in future sessions.

RFBerlin Masterclass by Pierre Cahuc: 3-4 April 2025

Our first masterclass will welcome Pierre Cahuc, Professor of Economics at Sciences Po, Program Director of the IZA “Labour Markets” program, and CEPR Research Fellow. Professor Cahuc’s research primarily centers on labor economics. He has authored books covering topics such as salary negotiations, reduced working hours, unemployment in France, social security, job flows, minimum wages, unemployment insurance, vocational education, economic debate, and social trust.

Professor Cahuc’s chapter in the Handbook of Labour Economics explores “The Micro and Macro Economics of Short-Time Work”, offering an overview of the history and role of short-time work, a policy first introduced in Germany in the 1930s. He examines how this tool helps preserve jobs, drawing from theoretical models and empirical evidence, and highlights key areas for future research.

This masterclass provides a unique opportunity, with plenty of time for discussion and direct interaction with Professor Cahuc. Participants will be able to ask questions and engage in conversations with one of the leading voices in labor economics.
