Christian Dustmann on Tackling Germany’s Labor Shortages

The German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung published an article on Germany’s labor shortages, citing research and expert commentary from Christian Dustmann.

Dustmann stressed the importance of adapting workplaces for older employees, noting that companies should “create positions where the experience of older workers is valued, without age-related strains becoming a problem.” He also highlighted the need to expand childcare, reform of the income taxation based on spousal income, and address bureaucratic hurdles that prevent qualified migrants from entering the labor market.

He emphasized that migration remains a crucial part of the solution: “Without migration issues, populist parties in Europe would hardly resonate,” he warned, urging policymakers to pursue a pragmatic course that combines regulation of asylum migration with easier labor market access for skilled workers and their families.
