Claudia Goldin on Gender Equality, Work, and Family Policy

Nobel laureate Claudia Goldin, Professor of Economics at Harvard University and Fellow of the RFBerlin Network, was featured in Süddeutsche Zeitung, one of Germany’s leading daily newspapers. In the interview, she discussed how tax and labour market structures shape gender equality, drawing on her extensive research on women’s participation in the workforce.

Goldin argued that men and women should be taxed separately, noting that joint taxation systems often discourage women from entering or remaining in full-time employment. She also addressed broader questions of work–life balance, childcare, and cultural expectations, emphasising that equality in rights does not automatically translate into equality in outcomes.

As keynote speaker at the RFBerlin Annual Public Lecture 2025, Claudia Goldin expanded on these themes, highlighting the need for policy reforms that enable families to balance work and care more equitably.

The text, “Männer und Frauen sollten getrennt besteuert werden” (eng.: Men and women should be taxed separately), by Bastian Brinkmann and Valerie Höhne was published in German in Süddeutsche Zeitung on 5 November 2025.
