Ukrainian Displacement After Four Years: RFBerlin Research Featured in German Media

This week marked the four year anniversary of the war between Russia and Ukraine. RFBerlin published research on Ukrainian displacement, which was picked up by multiple regional German media outlets including Münchner Merkur, Frankfurter Rundschau, Hessisch-Niedersächsische Allgemeine and Giessener Anzeiger.

The RFBerlin Research Insight “More and more Ukrainians Want to Stay in Denmark” by Mette Foged, Karen-Inge Karstoft and Edith Zink examines survey data from Ukrainian refugees in Denmark which tracks a clear shift: temporary protection increasingly turns into longer-term settlement plans. Four years after the invasion most adult Ukrainians in Denmark now see their future in the country. “The longer the war lasts, the more refugees want to stay“, Foged notes.

On the same day, RFBerlin CReAM published a report: “Four years on: What Gallup Data Reveal About Staying, Leaving, and Life Expectations in Ukraine” by Christian Dustmann, Tommaso Frattini and Camilla Piovesan, which looks into data on the Ukrainians’ desire to migrate. The outcome of this study showed that after four years of war, less people desire to leave the country than before the war. Dustmann explains that “it is likely that external threats increase the importance of group membership and strengthen identification with one’s own group”.
